Tokyo's Best: Tempura Meshi Kaneko Hannosuke

Kaneko Hannosuke offers reasonably priced tempuras without sacrificing quality. Their tempura meshi does not disappoint and is one of the tastiest I had here in Japan.

I am a big tempura lover and have been curious about all the buzz surrounding the popular tempura joint, Kaneko Hannosuke, located in Nihonbashi. Their specialty is the Tempura-meshi, where they serve freshly fried tempuras piece by piece and cook it at the counter in front of you.

It usually takes an hour queue to be able to enter the restaurant, but I was lucky enough to get in around 20 minutes. It is better to go off peak hours like 3 or 4pm.

I ordered their anago (conger eel) tempura meshi. It comes with anago, ebi (shrimp), egg, pumpkin, green pepper, chicken, and maitake mushroom tempura. Their tempura meshi does not disappoint and is one of the tastiest I had here in Japan. It comes with soft boiled egg tempura which you can mix with soy sauce and rice. They are affordably priced too with the basic tempura meshi at 980yen. It is definitely worth the wait. I have yet to try their edo-mae tendon next time located at the other Haneko Kanosuke branch.

ACCESS: The restaurant is about 5 minutes walk from Mitsukoshimae station of the Tokyo Metro Ginza line.
