The autumn colors of Kyoto reach its peak during mid November. We were late and caught the tail end of the season  of 2016 coming in early December. Nonetheless, Kyoto still never ceases to amaze and offer one the best autumn views of Japan. Here are some fall foliage spots we were able to catch:

Kodai-ji Temple. It is located in Kyoto's Higashiyama District and is considered one of the finest in the area.

The Kiyomizudera Temple is not to be missed, surrounded by beautiful maple trees illuminated at night. It is one of the popular temples in the Higashiyama area.

Gion Shirakawa  (see header photo), is a few minutes walk from central Gion area. It is probably one of the most beautiful streets in Kyoto lined with autumn trees, old houses, restaurants, and tea houses while stream runs in the middle through a canal.

ACCESS: Most of the temples we visited are located at the Southern Higashiyama district accessible by bus. From Kyoto station, you can take bus number 100 or 206 heading towards Kiyomizudera and get off at the Gion stop.

Accomodation: Staying in a Traditional Japanese Inn (Ryokan)

For me, no trip in Japan is complete without staying in a traditional Japanese inn or ryokan. We were able to book at Yoshimizu ryokan tucked in the hills of Maruyama park. The inn has a fantastic location surrounded by autumn trees and near the temples of Higashiyama. It is indeed a great place to immerse both in nature and Japanese culture.

Since the inn is located on top of a hill, the area is very peaceful and serene, although going there might take a bit of a climb (around 15 minuttes walk from the foot of Yasaka shrine). Make sure to book 2 or 3 months in advance as it is quite difficult to find a good place to stay during this peak season.

Day Trip to Arashiyama

We also decided to take a day trip to Arashiyama, as it is a good side trip from Kyoto especially during autumn. We rented a bicycle to go around and the town was easy to navigate by bike. The highlights of our trip to Arashiyama include: the Togetsukyo bridge, the Bamboo forest, Tenryuji temple, and the Okochi Sanso Villa.

ACCESS: We took the Hankyu line from Kawaramachi station in central Kyoto and got off at Katsura station. From there, we transferred to the Hankyu Arashiyama line and finally reached Arashiyama station.
